Performing Arts Workshop is excited to announce the launch of the
Geneva Powerhouse Power On! Arts Activation Campaign.

This foundational campaign will aid in the launch of our Artist Residency Program Seismic Shift, setting precedence for Performing Arts Workshop to become a dedicated performance space curator for artists in the bay area to create, showcase, and exhibit artworks centering Black, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latine, and Queer Trans Artists’ experiences and stories.

Performing Arts Workshop aims to center resources to support works that uplift and inspire youth and the District 11 community where the Geneva Powerhouse resides.

About District 11

District 11 is a culturally rich, vibrant, diverse part of the city, encompassing the Excelsior and OMI neighborhoods, it is a stronghold of San Francisco’s working class. Due to systemic racism and wealth inequality, D11 students and families continue to witness their neighborhoods change in character and affordability. As a dedicated community organization in District 11, Performing Arts Workshop is honored to have partnered with D11 over the span of 40 years through youth arts programming and enrichment. We look forward to growing this relationship by bringing forth a dedicated, impactful, and inspiring arts and storytelling venue for the youth and D11 community.

The Excelsior, Outer Mission/Ingleside and other neighborhoods of San Francisco’s District 11 are culturally rich, vibrant and diverse.

→ Half of District 11 residents were born outside the U.S.

→ This is the highest concentration of immigrant residents in SF.

→ District 11 has the fewest residents (one-third) living in English-only speaking households.

These communities have long been underserved.

District 11 Budget

Neighboring Districts Budget

District 11’s per capita youth investment is 59% the investment of neighboring districts. For decades, community members have been calling for an arts center to provide a place to celebrate the cultural richness of all who live there, and a designated place for youth to learn through the arts.

Creative Sovereignty

The Workshop aims to collaborate with artists through a model of Creative Sovereignty (a term coined by Seminole/Muskogee Director Tara Moses) to describe the inherent right to create artistic work free from outside interference, particularly those that may be oppressive.)

Our collaboration style is one of providing ample access to our resources, the relationships we have built in the Bay Area since our founding in 1965, thought-partnering, especially as it relates to how the project will work with and impact our home neighborhood, and finally, the social and spiritual support to a project as well as connecting artists to our community.”

Seismic Shift
Residency Program

The Artist Residency Program will commission 1 - 2 artists per cycle to create community centered work. Commissioned artists will be fully supported through: stipend, rehearsal space, performance space, publicity, and community building events.

Creating an exchange with our local D11 community, the residency will also provide space for community conversations, artist talks, classes and performances, many at low or no cost.

Arts Immersion at the Geneva Powerhouse

The campaign will contribute towards youth and local artist Arts Immersion at the Geneva Powerhouse space by enriching the walls, windows, exterior and interior with student made works and local artists installations! While the Powerhouse is a beautiful 1901 redesigned brick building that once housed San Francisco’s first rail cars, it is an essential aim to cultivate a space that reflects the youth and artists it serves. We hope to exemplify the creative brilliance of our youth and artists by installing student and artist poetry, writing, sculptures, photography, and artworks. These works will be open for viewing to the public community and youth to circulate inspiration and honoring of all artists.

As arts presence decrease and arts programs and presence of arts close around the country due to the effects of the global pandemic, changing economy, and struggle to tell stories that reflect this countries’ true and expansive history in the face of opposition, it is vitally important that new programs continue to open bravely and with their community centered and clearly defined.

Funding will go towards:
Artist Stipend, Artist fees, materials, equipment costs, rehearsal space costs, showcase/performance/ exhibition, promotion support, photography/videography fees, performance space upgrade, student and local artist commissioned works and installation, moveable gallery, and the beautification of the Geneva Powerhouse’s interior and exterior.
