Each director is selected by the Board of Directors for a term of three years that begins on July 1 and concludes on June 30 of the third following year. Directors may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Former directors in good standing are eligible for reelection to the Board.

Make a personal, annual contribution that is significant to you and commensurate with your financial ability.
It is each board member’s responsibility to identify potential allies and develop relationships that help support the mission and values of the organization. This may look like assisting in individual donor and corporate donor evaluation, cultivation, and solicitation processes. This may also look like bringing people together that are not donors or board members that have other ways they can help uplift Performing Arts Workshop’s shared vision and goals.
Attend, support, and assist in fundraising for special events. Volunteer and attend the annual Student Showcase.
Share resources and talents with the organization, including professional expertise and contacts for financial support and in-kind donations.

The role of the Workshop’s Board of Directors is to provide advice, council, and strategic thinking to the Workshop as a whole. In this key moment of change, we are looking for dedicated thought-partners who can maintain the following involvement:
Attend all meetings of the board and relevant committees.
Lend your sound knowledge as board members throughout the entirety of your three-year term, which is renewable for additional terms .
Represent and serve as an ambassador for the Workshop by acting as a spokesperson and communicating our mission, work, and values to your (and our) communities.
The usual time commitment for board participation is 6-7 hours per month; however, this workload may increase at first as we recruit more board members and innovate our board structure.

Actively participate in an overall organizational planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring the plan’s goals.
Monitor the quality and effectiveness of programs and their implementation.
Ensure adequate financial resources: Secure adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission.
Protect assets and provide proper financial oversight: Review the annual budget, provide budget inquiries and recommendations when necessary, ensure that proper financial controls are in place.
Articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate the board’s performance.
Enhance the organization’s public standing: Articulate the organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community through advocacy.
Ensure legal and ethical integrity: Adherence to legal standards and ethical and anti-racist norms.

Commitments and Responsibilities

The exploratory phase of board membership is intended to provide prospective board members with a robust opportunity to familiarize themselves with Performing Arts Workshop’s operational structure, programs, methodology, and values so that they are better resourced to decide if they can commit to guiding the Workshop to achieve our mission: to help young people develop critical thinking, creative expression, socio emotional learning, media literacy, and essential learning skills through the arts. This phase supports prospective board members and the current board in their candidacy decision making. It is intended to safeguard mutual commitment and values alignment.
Prospective board members are invited to participate in the exploratory phase that requires a six hour commitment. The board voting process is conducted following the exploratory phase.
Prospective Board Member Interview (1 hour - remote)
A conversation to explore values and commitment alignment
Board Meeting Attendance (2 hours - remote)
Prospective Board Members attend a board meeting as guests so they can better understand the cadence, structure, and vibe of Performing Arts Workshop board meetings.
Program Exploratory Process (3 hours)
Prospective Board Members participate in a three session Exploratory Process with program and artistic staff
Introductory meeting to align values and participation norms for a classroom visit (program manager, teaching artist, prospective board member) (1 hour - remote)
Classroom Visit (program manager and prospective board member) (1 hour - in person)
Classroom Visit debrief (program manager, teaching artist, prospective board member) (1 hour - remote)

Board members are elected for three-year terms and every term starts on July 1 and concludes June 30 (although members may join at any point in the year). Board members may serve additional three-year terms after their first term has ended.
The Board meets Quarterly for a three-hour meeting to review and take action on the Strategic plan and other governance issues. In addition, Board members serve on at least one standing committee which meets quarterly or as needed. Your total time commitment will be approximately 10 hours per quarter to the organization. -
Board members serve on a voluntary basis without compensation.

We value participation and contributions beyond financial support and don’t want finances to be a barrier to joining the board. We will work with what you are able to contribute while also noting there are non-monetary ways to support the Workshop’s programs.

We are looking for potential board members who have a background in marketing, event rentals, non-profit law, finances, development (foundation, corporate, government, individual giving), and strategic planning.
