Course Title: Moving Towards Comics

Teaching Artist: Sabina Kariat & Nico Maimon

Course Language: English

Level: Beginner

Ages: 14 – 18

Materials Needed: N/A

Program Dates: July 6, 2021 – July 30, 2021

Course Description: In this arts program, co-taught by Sabina Kariat, an illustrator, animator, and comics artist, and Nico Maimon, a performance artist, we will bring together two art forms that don’t often live together, but have surprising connections: movement and visual art!

In this in-person (socially distanced) community arts program, we will explore the questions: How can movement be inspired by visuals? How can visual art be inspired by dance? And how can these two art forms co-exist?

In our program, this will look like large-scale collaborative drawings that inspire dances, like stories told both on paper and through the body, like being outdoors and making art based on what we see and feel.

We will make comics, relating the story arch of a comic to the sequences of movement in dance. We will take advantage of being in person to wander and explore the area, make art based off our setting, use “found materials” in collages, and choreograph movements inspired by specific places. We will think about our city and bring its history into our art forms, making comics about Bay Area activist histories, and learning about ways dance has been a form of activism in bay area communities.

Calling all the movers, the shakers, the doodlers, the painters, and the creative thinkers who are ready to fill up a space with pencil marks and movement. Join our artistic community and create with us!
